Shelly Francis has a distinctive approach to training Patricia Stempel’s 2003 gelding Doktor (Diamond Hit x Gurena), 2004 gelding Danilo (De Niro x Annabelle), 2004 Rubinio (Roh Magic x Patrizia) and also her own 2004 Le Roi (L’Andiamo x Donnerpearl). In 2015, she competed Doktor and Danilo for the USA Dressage Team in three of the most difficult European competitions in Aachen, Rotterdam (NED) and Hagen with scores in the mid-70 percent range. Most notably, she represented the USA at the two U.S. invitations-only 2015 Aachen Horse show.

Shelly and Patricia Stempel found the 16.1 hand bay Diamond Hit bay gelding, (born in 2003), in Germany. Shelly knew immediately that they had found an intelligent five-year-old athlete with a future in Grand Prix dressage. The duo found success and in 2014 Shelly and Doktor were named as the traveling reserve for the 2014 Alltech™ FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France.

In 2015, the formidable combination campaigned successfully at the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival series in Wellington, Florida providing them a place on the European tour that summer. Doktor proved his athletic ability throughout Europe that summer competing in Grand Prix, the Grand Prix Freestyle and the Grand Prix Special at competitions including Aachen, Rotterdam, and Copenhagen.

In 2016, Doktor and Shelly were thrilled to be named as the traveling reserve to the U.S. Olympic Equestrian Team for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

After an extremely successful career with Shelly Francis, assistant trainer Rebecca Waite has taken over the ride on Doktor. In 2019, Rebecca and Doktor campaigned for a spot on the team for the 2019 Pan Am Games and had a very successful first season at Grand Prix together. In the upcoming 2020 season, Rebecca and Doktor plan to show at the Grand Prix level.

Danilo – (nickname Dani)

Not long after finding Doktor, Shelly and Pat Stempel found the young Danilo, (born in 2004) 17 hand De Niro (De Niro x Andiamo) and began training for the Grand Prix level step-by-step. Shelly has brought the talented Danilo up through the ranks and was successful in 2015 receiving consistently high scores in Wellington, Florida during the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival series. That same year the pair had a successful summer tour in Europe including Rotterdam and Copenhagen.

Shelly has carefully managed his career and he has received high praise and scores at the most prestigious European competitions. In 2018, he won the Aachen CDI4* freestyle with a score of 79.305% and competed at the 2018 World Cup Paris.

Shelly is looking forward to campaigning Danilo in the upcoming year with a focus on the 2020 Las Vegas World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Rubinio – (nickname Rubi) Shelly2.3

Shelly and Patricia Semple found the remarkable Rubinio (Roh Magic x Patrizia) as a 9-year-old gelding. In 2015, Shelly campaigned Rubinio, nickname Rubi, in the small tour in Wellington, Florida.

Shelly has carefully produced this young horse campaigning the small tour in Aachen in 2016 continuing to bring him along gently.

In 2020, Shelly plans for Rubino to compete in the Grand Prix with either herself, or assistant trainer Rebecca Waite, in the irons.


Le Roi – (nickname Le Roi)

Always maintained a close north/southeast friendship with breeder Ann Kitchel of Vermont’s Huntington Farm, and bought the talented Le Roi (L’Andiamo x Donnerpearl) from her as a foal. Shelly carefully produced the young horse, and in 2017, Rebecca Waite, assistant trainer, and Le Roi successfully competed in the small tour season in CDI competitions in Wellington, Florida.

In 2019, assistant trainer Rebecca Waite showed Le Roi successfully in the Grand Prix, and the pair are looking forward to the 2020 winter season in Wellington, Florida.
